There are two types of knee support which can be beneficial in the rehabilitation of jumper's knee.

This works by putting tension on the patella tendon in the same way an epicondylitis clasp treats tennis elbow or the achilles tendon strap works on achilles pain. By putting tension onto the tendon this takes some of the jarring and shock out of the tendon and so reduces the overall strain on it. This support is useful for taking the strain off the patella tendon it it is painful and you need to be on your feet as well as when returning to normal training.

A support or heat retainer provides protection and support. It will help keep the kneecap tracking in the correct manner and provide warmth for the patella tendon. Warm tendons work better than cold ones. The hole for the patella to protrude through will help reduce the pressue on the patella.
Use it for helping to get better but do not rely on it indefinitely. By wearing it too long it is thought muscles may weaken. If you find you need to wear it for more than a week then you really need professional help. Always use it as part of an overall rehabilitation programme.
