Expert Interview - Over pronation
Sports Podiatrist Ian Sadler explains over pronation and its causes.
What is Pronation?
Pronation is the movement of the subtalar joint and its movement downwards, in combination with dorsiflexion of the ankle. We need this movement to move normally, for shock absorbtion and to translate forces.
Overpronation is when this happens at the wrong time, or too much. This puts stress on tissues, such as with plantar fasciitis, but it also reduces the function of the bones in the feet as well.
Causes of Pronation
The most commonly cited cause of pronation is where the foot is inverted, or faces inwards. This can be just the heel, just the forefoot, or both.
It means as the foot hits the ground it is further turned out, meaning that it has to roll further inwards (pronate more) to correct this. Motion control trainers are usually aimed at correcting this.
