View Full Version : Hip giving way and painful muscle spasms

I have had lumbar pain and right-handed sacroiliac pain for some time and after gait analysis got running shoes to help control over-pronation.
I was also seeing a physiotherapist and doing some strengthening and stretching exercises. Both of these measures seemed to help stop the pain getting too bad.
My job is a cleaner, though, and constant lifting and bending are part of my job (20 hours a week).
I was running 15 miles a week, cycling 10 miles a week and hill-walking 12 miles a week. I was trying to increase running distances as I had done a few 10k events (on and off road) and had entered a 9 mile trail race. After an 8 mile run I started getting left handed sacroiliac pain. The next day I stepped backwards off a stair accidentally and jarred my left hip. I carried on working and exercising as usual but within a few days was having a lot of pain. I had an X-ray of the hip which showed no bony injury. I had to stop running but after a couple of weeks was feeling that walking was pain-free again and did a long off-road run - not a good idea, I know!
During the run I slipped on a rock with my left leg sliding sideways in front of my right leg, causing a very sharp pain.
The next day I could hardly walk but after a day or so the pain started to ease a bit and I carried on with work, walking and cycling, even though it was rather painful. After a few days, my leg started giving way at the hip every now and then. I felt severe pain in the groin, radiating down to behind my left knee, and in my left buttock, and it felt as if someone was hammering my thigh bone every time I put weight on it. Now, two weeks after the rock slip, I cannot walk at all - I am reduced to crawling around the floor! If I try to put weight on my left leg, the hip, buttock and thigh muscles go completely into painful spasms.
I went to A+E yesterday - they said there was no bony injury and it appeared to be an overuse injury. I was told to have a week off work (no choice anyway as I cannot walk!) and not to do any type of exercise. I have an appointment to go back next week.
I am totally puzzled, as I can't understand what exactly is causing the weakness, pain and muscle spasms as I seemed to be able to walk and weight-bear okay a few days after the slip but it suddenly took a downhill turn. Has anyone experienced anything like this or have an idea what is going on?
