HI

I am due a steroid injection this Friday for a bursa in my foot
This is a long running injury I have picked up and have tried all the RICE and everything else does not seem to work

I is weird to explain but I will do my best, At the back of the heel slightly towards the right like 4 mils it is very tender and when touched it feels like a little vein. I press on it and it send a shocking sensation up my leg. Catches when I wear shoes and also when sleeping and running the heel over the edge of the mattress

I am a little worried about the cortisone injection and would like to know if anyone has had something similar etc and if the cortisone will fix it all together as I have read that it wears off after a few months

The MRI scan and according to the doctor shows that it is a bursa and an injection will resolve

Any info would be great and are there alternate methods to resolve

At the moment I am lined up for the injection on Friday and will then rest the foot for 4 weeks applying RICE

Thanks

Hi
If its shown up as a bursa on an MRI then this is most likely the cause of your pain. Cortisone injections are a regular treatment for bursitis and they work in some cases, where in others they may only have short-term effects.
I would have the injection and rest as much as possible from anything which aggravates it even if it feels good. It the shot improves it, take this time to look into biomechanical causes...e.g. foot position. Perhaps insoles or heels pads may help?

hI there

Thanks for the reply

does this get caused by heavy strain on the foot etc
I play ice and inline hockey, rugby and cycle

Heavy foot based sports etc
Just weird how i cant remember an exact time this happened or started
No heavy bumps that i can recall etc

Is the injection heavy pain and is it into the joint of is there an actual sack with fluid between the joints etc

As i mentioned i will take the injection and then rest it for a few weeks
all things being good what would be the best way back into action as i really do love my sport

Start with walking etc and maybe change a few of the shoes i have -

also - will i be able to walk after the injection or arrange a lift home

I'm not sure from what you have said which Bursa is affected. It could be either of these:

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/achilles/achillesbursitis.htm

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/foot/calcaneusbursa.htm

Either way it is an overuse injury, meaning there isn't a specific point when it happens, it just gradually comes on and gets worse.

The injection is in to the bursa itself, which is a sack of fluid. If at all possible I would try to get a lift home as it will be pretty sore.
