Hi
Where abouts is the pain? Can you explain in more detail? Where is it in relation to the achilles tendon? And how high above the floor?
Also, what activities hurt it? Did it come on gradually or suddenly?

the pain is on the curve at the back of the heel bout 30mm up.it came on suddenly I would say.Ialso think going by pictures on your web page its round about where the achilles joins the bone if i press it i can find the pain also
football is the only sport i play week in week out

It might be a case of insertional tendinitis. This occurs at the point where the tendon attaches in to the bone. You can read some moer about it here:

If this is the case it is usually painful to touch and can be painful to go up on the tip toes. There is often a slightly red and swollen area too.

Hi
Another thing to consider is retrocalcaneal bursitis:

Either way, both of these conditions would heal quicker with professional treatment and would be less likely to return as they can pin-point the underlying cause.
