Hi,
I've been having problems with my hamstring over the last month or so and it has gradually reached the point where it is causing me considerable problems when running.
I have been gradually increasing my running mileage (no more than 10% per week) over the last couple of months as part of my base training before going off road and hitting the hills. Approximately 4 weeks ago I went out on what should have been an 15 mile run, with about 400 metres ascent but due to some navigational errors this ended up being approximately 25 miles with approximately 750 metres ascent. This overtraining is where I believe the injury stems from as it was the first time I started to feel discomfort in the hamstring area.
The symptoms are a very uncomfortable, dull pain/ache when sat down or driving the car. This pain is generally only present one to two days after my long weekend run. Shorter 6 - 8 mile runs seem not to bring on this pain afterwards. Whilst on long runs the pain is sharper, but I would still not regard it as an acute pain. On my most recent long distance run (24 miles), I had to stop at intervals past approximately 19 miles due to the injury affecting my running gait. I ended up running without being able to achieve the same stride with my injured leg.
I am assuming that this is some form of overuse injury, caused by over training earlier in my programme? I would however be very grateful for any advice either confirming this to be the case, or detailing the likely nature of what I have done, any possible re habilitation, and any recommended rest times. I am due to enter the loading phase of my training, and whilst I am very reluctant to lay off training, I also do not want to drag the injury on through into my race.
Thanks in advance.
