my son who is a very fit and healthy 15 year old ,was playing rugby on Sunday and was the victim of a late challenge. He was tackled to the floor from standing and landed directly on the upper arm area of his shoulder. He has applied ice to the area and have been checked out at the local Urgent Care Centre. He had and is still experiencing this morning"a hot pin n needles" sensation down his right arm, no movement what so ever and cant feel his fingers.

His arm is susbended in a sling, the xray did not show any fractures, however we were told that he had sustained some, tendan, muscle and ligament damage. He has to go and see the consultant on Friday, but im curious to know what could have caused the pins n needles and the numness the hospital didn't really say. and how long will this last.

Also some indication to how long it will be before he should attempt any sports ?

Hi

Tingling and numbness indicate nerve involvement. This is in the vast majority of cases temporary and due to pressure on the nerve from swelling/bleeding/muscle tightness etc. He should find this eases over the next few days.

As for playing sport again, he needs to wait until it is fully healed - i.e. there is no pain and he can move it equal to the unaffected side. Going back to anything too soon may cause further problems. I am sure the consultant will explain all of this for you.

Good luck!
