Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on this?! I'm a student physio so I guess I should have an idea about what to do but I'm stuck!
I had ACL surgery (patellar tendon graft) on my left leg just over 2 years ago and did the usual rehab and was discharged from the knee class after a year with good strength for both hamstrings and quads. My quads on the involved leg were in fact stronger than those on the good leg! Hamstrings were about the same on both legs. I was able to play hockey and the knee felt great.
Now since I was discharged I have been attempting to go to the gym regularly to keep up the strength but I dislocated a bone in my foot and that laid me off for a while last year. Since I started back at the gym (i've not even attempted hockey!) I've noticed the hamstrings on my left side are extremely weak and easily fatigue. I have about half normal knee range when I actively do a hamstrings curl and I can only manage about 8 before the muscles start to cramp. I have also had sacroiliac problems on my left side.
I've tried strengthening exercises for hamstrings and flutter kicks but I've been doing these for a month now with no real improvement. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what to do? Is it ok to run with such poor hamstring strength? (I've been training for a 10km in 2 weeks time) Is it worth trying to get referred back to my own physio?
Any ideas/suggestions/help much appreciated!!
