51 years old, average weight, active in several recreational sports. I injured my hip in a deep squat at work about 10 weeks ago. initialy lower back pain in the iliolumbar tendon, then in my hip, by the 6th day the sciatic kicked in and it was hard to get out of bed. went to a good Chiro, xray'ed, confirmed my L5 was out and took 4 visits to get it back in, a couple more with traction and minipulation and it was well stablized. For the past 4 weeks, the lumbar tendon is achy on and off, hip and buttock aches or is tight, sometimes tightness in the back of thigh. I"ve been doing stretches, deep massage, light eliptical workouts and walking. Also started aa kettle bell class to build up the core. I"m responding well to the massage, but the lumbar tendon and buttock tightnefss, are still a pretty constant on/off thing. I've got an appointment with a sports injury doctor, but I have to wait 2 weeks, hoping to get better for a snowboard trip in mid Dec. Any Idea whats going on with me? I"m fortunate that with the pain has never been bad enough for painkillers, just a constant annoyance and kept me from doing heavy lifting or a lot of bending at work. Chiro and a McKenzie both said my range of motion is excellent, in the top 10% of what they see.

The more research I do on my symptoms, the more I"m inclined to think I have minor-moderate sacroiliac joint disfuntion. I narrowed it down to iliolumbar/piriformus/sacroiliac issues, and the sacroiliac is the only one where i have all the symptoms. Stiff lower back in the mornings or when sitting for periods of time, referd pain to the buttock, thigh, and sometimes lower leg.
Hi,
I would certainly want to look at your SIJ and see if there is anything out of alignment here, in my experience even a small malalignment can cause real problems.
Also if you have a tight piriformis this can produce the symptoms you are describing - please view here for information on stretches :http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/buttocks/piriformis.htm
Alongside this it could be possible that your muscles on the inside of your thighs could be tight, which could further exacerbate the sore muscle.
See what the sports doctor comes up with, hopefully they will be able to advise you how best to proceed and develop a rehabilitation programme to address your needs.
Please let us know how you get on :)

Doctor seems to think I have a strained hip flexor. Now I'm thinking it's the Iliopsoas as it is an often overlooked cause of back, thigh and buttock pain. He perscribed 4-6 weeks with a PT, 2-3 times a week. We'll see what the PT says tomorrow. If there's one thing I've learned thru all this: WE HAVE TOO MANY PARTS!! LOL!
