Hi, I'm looking for some advice on an injury I sustained to my ankle. Sorry if the post is a bit long but I figured the more details the better.
A month ago I was performing a gymnastics routine when I landed badly on my right ankle, as I landed I almost passed out with the pain (I have sprained my ankle numerous times but this felt different) It swelled on both sides very quickly and I went to casualty for an x-ray. They aid that they were unsure about a fracture and put it in a cast referring me to a fracture clinic.
10 days later the cast was removed revealing a very swollen very bruised (both sides) ankle. It was re x-rayed and these showed no fracture. I have now been referred for an MRI scan which I am due to have on the 14th.
My consultant was particularly concerned about the swelling on the inside of the ankle. A few weeks on and although swelling has gone down it is still visibly bigger (where tarsal’s and metatarsals meets there is no definition. The arch in my foot is visibly reduced and movement is very limited. I have a small degree of rotation with minimal pain. I can point my toes but am unable to flex my foot upwards. I cannot put my foot flat to the floor when placing it directly underneath me and have lost ability to 'tap' my foot. Pain only really comes through pressure from shoes or knocking the area that is inside my ankle below and on the ankle bone (in front of the Achilles tendon). I cannot walk properly by can put weight on my toes and hobble around, although as I have not been told to weight bear I only do this at home and use crutches when I go out.
My consultant told me that he is not familiar with injured to the inside of the foot (comforting!) I was therefore hoping someone might be able to guess a diagnosis so that I have some idea of treatment/recovery. I have been referred for physio but have not been given an appointment as yet.
I am a PE teacher an am desperate to return to work, please advice.
