I completed my last marathon in October 2006 and a few days after the race I developed some pain and swelling behind the lateral malleolus and along the lateral side of my right foot. My orthopedic said it was probably peroneal tendonitis and to cut back on mileage and take anti-anflammatory medicine. I did this treatment regime, and slowly started back to running and cycling the past two months. The same issues flared up in my right foot, with pain behind the lateral malleolus and along the outside my foot. However, now I am having numbness and tingling between my IV and V toes that seems to originate from the pain on the outside of my right leg (peroneus longus/brevis?) When I apply pressure behind the latera malleolus, where I am having some pain, I get the sensation of numbness and tingling between my toes.

I am so frustrated at this point. The only advice I can get is to stop all activity and see if the condition improves. I would really like to know what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Frustrated Runner,

I would suggest you to visit a podiatrist.

The podiatrist might prescribe some orthotics to correct the function of your foot, you also need a good pair of shoes (again the podiatrist might suggest some appropriate shoes).

Muslce strengthening and stretching are also necessary. Deep tissue massage might also help.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I think I may seek out a podiatrist who works with athletes.

Hi,

Definitely as suggested above, seek out the opinion of a podiatrist who is experienced in working with athletes. You might also possibly want to speak with a physiotherapist who specialises in lower limbs depending on the outcome of the podiatry appointment.

Do please let us know how you get on!
