I have noticed this problem with my ankle that keeps recurring and it is becoming a serious problem now. I ride horses and do lots of jumping and therefore my legs and ankles are under a lot of stress, supporting my weight all the time. My left ankle has started bothering me though and I can no longer ride for more than 5 minutes without getting severe pain and having to stop.

I have asked my doctor about this and she says to wait and see but everyday it gets worse and I'm wondering if I'm not permanently injuring myself. I can't afford not to be riding and training constantly and I would like to avoid any physical therapy or surgeries.

As for the injury, I can't think of any reasons why it would do this. I haven't sprained it or rolled it or anything in a very, very long time. Like at least 6 years. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Emily!

Would definately need more information on where the pain is exactly? inside, outside, top/bottom of the ankle etc? Also what kind of pain? sharp? ache?

If you have had previous ankle injures (even if they were a long time ago!) you may have a long-standing weakness or muscle imbalance which could affect your ankle.

Let me know a bit more information so I can give you a better answer! I think your Dr is wrong though...if the pain is getting worse he/she should really be doing something about it.

I ride alot and have had one ankle get really sore quickly, and it felt like it was going to give out. Especially whe we had alot of rugged counrty to go up and down while moving cows. I think mine was caused from the saddle not fitting my body right and also from my back problems that I alredy had. It seemed like the one leg felt different in the stirrrup. All of this is probably unique to me but some if might help you to understand your problem.
