I am a 31 year mom who has been running for a couple years. I consider myself a novice runner because I am still flying by the seat of my pants training-wise. I am attempting a marathon this fall.

I played in my high school alumni basketball game last week and I sustained some sort of injury. I knew I did something funny, but I continue to run for another few minutes. I then benched myself and sat out for the remainder of the game. By the evening, I was limping significantly.

I have a severe pain at the outside of my calf just below the knee. At first the pain was more severe in the front outside calf, but that pain is very minimal now. The most severe pain is centered in the tissue padding the bone to the outside of my leg. I can use the eliptical(with only minor discomfort), but not run on the treadmill. The pain comes and goes. Standing on it doesn't seem to bother it either. The pain become very intense trying to slide a shoe off with out loosening it completely and removing it with my hand. I also have minor discomfort in the back calf.

I am sorry that I can't describe it more succinctly. I don't even have any idea what I am dealing with to figure it out to treat it effectively. I have laid low for a week with almost no change in pain. In some ways the pain is greater that it was last friday.

I would appreciate any help or ideas in this matter. I really am baffled by this injury.

Hi

I would advise you go and get it looked at my a sports injury professional. It is difficult to give advice on injuries such as this online, with limited information and not being able to see the problem. However I would guess at either a muscle tear (not sure of which muscle as do not know exact location of pain) or possible lateral ligament damage.

Definately go and see someone if the pain hasn't changed in over a week. Make sure they check your flexibility at the ankle and knee and foot position for over-pronation/Supination.

Hope this helps
