Hello , this is my first post.

I injured my big toe on my left foot approx 4-5 months ago, while playing football on an artifitial surface, but occured when the ball was hammered against my toe, and bent it the wrong direction - to the left ! I can move my toe up and down, no problem, no pain, i can walk, and even run with no discomfort.

However, when i try to play football, twisting, turning, getting feet kncocked etc, when my toe is bent to the left, it really hurts, sending a sharp pain along the side of the toe / foot. I have been out of football for 4-5 mionths now, and it does not seem to be getting any better. I twinged it the other day while doing some DIY, and it really hurt.

Does anyone have any tips to healing it ? My doctor said "rest" your foot, but not possible, as i work, like everyone else !

Hi

I would guess you have done some damage to the collateral ligament which runs down the inside of the big toe at the joint which connects your big toes to your 1st metatarsal. This ligament resists lateral (side ways) movement of the toe and so a forceful sideways force can tear, or rupture the ligament.

To help it to heal I would recommend seeing a physiotherapist or sports therpaist who can fully asess the problem, make sure it is what I think and if it is can use ultrasound and massage to help it to heal. They may strap your toe in the mean time to prevent placing strain on the already weakend ligament.

Hope this helps

Heidi

i would also suggest having an x-ray done to see if there are any chipped bones or non-union fractures, etc.
