hi ppl, about 6 months ago i was playing a football match went to jump for the ball and landed on inside of ankle. I just heard a big snap. Got x-rayed and had an avulsion fracture on inside of right ankle. Was put in a cast for about 4 weeks. The pain was agonising. ?I seen the consultant a couple of times after and told him about pain and also had clicking round the back of ankle.

So months on i had my mri scan on ankle and came back that the deltoid was still sprained and also synovial FHL and also some fibre damage. The ankle is very resticted to movement escpecially round the back where achilles is. I asked doc why this was and he said its fluid round FHL. I asked him about treatment for it and he mentioned injections of some sort and that he would get back to me. Starting to get fed up now waiting about , id pay anything to get this resolved asap, if anyone has had the same problem could they share what treatment they had and if there is anywhere i can go privately. Also will sports massage or ultrasound help in anyway, thanks marty

Hi!
Visit a sport therapist/physio/physical therapist who can provide massage, stretching exercises and ultrasound initially, which will help to reduce the fluid and increase the movement. Ultrasound will also break down any residual scar tissue.

Following this, a thorough but gradual strengthening program and a lot of proprioception (balance) work is essential.

I would make getting some therapeutic treatment such as this a priority over waiting for injections from the consultant. In my experience (presuming they are talking about corticosteroid injections) they only provide short-term relief (2-3 months max). Some good treatment and exercise program would be a more long-term approach!

I hope this helps!

hi i know this post is a bit old but just thought i would post an update,
ok i got the steroid injections which did not help and about 8 months of physio which i went every week and still the same, got another mri scan the other week which didnt show much change from the first one , which was thickening of the fhl and pieces of bone still floating about.
seen the consultant last week and has referred me to a specialist ankle physio in musgrave park hospital to see if she can do anything which i doubt it. so i have an appointment next week with her. the doc told me that the fhl has shorten considerably and said about cutting it to make it longer has any body heard of this procedure

Hi
I have heard of this procedure but i don't know much about it or its success rates.
What kind of things has the physio been doing with you? What exercises have you had to do?

To my knowledge, treatment FHL tendon injuries should include soft tissue treatment to the muscle, ultrasound and frcitions to the tendon itself, accompanied by stretching to improve ROM and strengthening of the whole ankle complex. Correction of any problems like over-pronation too.
