I am 57 years of age and ruptured my ACL while skiing 6 years ago. I was informed by my consultant that reconstructive surgery was inadvisable because of my age! I am very fit and can play tennis and run but can't play squash any more which is my favourite sport. Is there anything I can do to allow me to play squash? Brace, new surgical techniques which were not around 6 years ago...? Does the ACL rengenerate over a long period?
Hi,
In a rupture it is unlikely that the ACL will regenerate, however you could consider using a hinged knee brace to provide the joint with enough stability to allow you back to sports. I'm not sure if you're UK/US/AU but here are some examples that you might want to consider: http://www.return2fitness.co.uk/Supports_And_Braces/Knee_Supports
Definitely go for one which states it's suitable for ACL injuries such as this one http://www.return2fitness.co.uk/Supports_And_Braces/Knee_Supports/md429knee - they are fairly expensive but that is because of the level of support they provide - they are not just a neoprene support.
I hope this is of some help, please let us know how you get on!
