i am 30 and was diagnosed with this last year following a bone scan. i am been taking glucosamine and chondroitin supplements since then as well as regular stretching and low impact exercise like cycling as i was told this would help. Are there any particular exercises, either for flexibility or strength, which would help in addition to what i am already doing in order to maintain my badminton career. I have already cut back on how much i play to once or twice a week.

Hello,

Have you been given the option to consider a hip resurfacing? This is an operation, however it is nowhere near as major as the total hip replacement and could mean you would be able to get back to full on sport with minimal restrictions.

It may be that they want you to try conservative management initially, but might be worth discussing with your consultant, especially given your age.

Your local physio should be able to prepare you a general hip strengthening programme taking into account your current level of ability in the mean time.

Hope this is of some help, please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like further information!

many thanks for your reply!
thanks for the advice and i will be going back to my GP to complain about the service i have received.
i have never seen a consultant or physio since diagnosis, indeed the osteoarthritis was confirmed to be in a telephone conversion with my GP when he told be about the results of my bone scan. I presumed that most people didnt receive further consultations or treatment until the problem had become much worse, and was pretty much told that nothing could be done until it deteriorated further. Obviously this is not the case!
thanks again
