Hey, I wanted to get some advice.

I pulled my hamstring about 4 weeks ago. I was playing basketball and I felt a tug in my hamstring. There was no discoloration of bruising in the area so people just told me to rest and do a lot of stretching. However, 2 weeks ago my tendon that is on the outside of your leg behind the knee and my calf got bruised. My knee started to feel unstable. Its been 5 weeks and my hamstrings just feel as though there not even there, they are just week.

I was told I only need surgery if it is a ruptured hamstring and ruptured hamstrings have significant bruising, which did not happen. Should I get examined for my hamstrings? Do the tendons of the hamstring heal themselves like broken bones? Im just afraid that my performance will be hampered. I can't let that happen, because I love running.

Any advice is welcomed.

Hi,

Hamstring strains can be troublesome if let untreated. I recommend getting an assessment and definately some sports massage and stretching, followed by strengthening exercises.

When any of the hamstrings are torn, scar tissue often builds up at the site of the tear and the muscles shorten and become less flexible. This causes them to also feel weak and may be responsible for your knee feel instable.

Definately visit someone to get some proper treatment as once a hamstring has gone once, they can be recurrent if not properly treated and rehabilitation not followed.
