hello!

2 weeks ago during a run I developed some knee pain. The doctor thinks it is patellar tendinitis and has referred me for physio (I haven't gone yet). The pain is worst when descending stairs and hills, but also sometimes when just walking or sitting. I haven't been running on it (just a little today to see how it feels) but I do a LOT of walking due to owning a very energetic dog who needs a lot of exercise. I think that all the walking is aggravating my knee more than running, but it is not an option to stop walking my dog.

Someone suggested that a patellar tendon knee strap might provide some relief.

Otherwise, what are my best options? Physio, massage, both? How can I speed up recovery while still walking? Is it ok to run on it if I take it easy? (I can tire out the dog faster with running than with walking anyway ;)

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

If you don't want to invest in a patella knee strap (which do tend to be pretty helpful in this condition) there are some taping techniques which do the same thing. You can view these techniques here:

See if one of these helps you with your pain, and if so play it by ear. Perhaps go for a walk first, and then if that's ok try a light jog. Remember though, that you do still need to give the tendon time to heal! Don't expect it to get better overnight!

Other than that, I would see what the physio has to offer in terms of advice and treatment.

Please feel free to contact me should you require any further information.

Hi I went to an orthopedic doctor who took 5 xrays and did a physical exam on both my knees. Even though I also have pain going up and down stairs and hills, upon exam, he could elicit no pain no matter what he did, it was very frustrating. He said there was nothing to be concerned about and that he looks at 1000's of knees and that he saw no need for even physical therapy. He said there was no arthritis and that it must be tendonitis. He said if I took off some weight and strengthened my upper and lower leg muscles that my knee pain would improve. I asked him what I could do about the crunching noises and rubbing sensations that I had and he said not to worry about it. So, I would love to know what your physio says. I was underwhelmed with mine. So I'm back to self medicating with icing and ibuprofen.

I am a massage therapist and I can tell you that trigger point therapy can help substantially. I have clients that can prove this. After the first session you'll already feel a difference. It really works just make sure you find the right therapist. Good luck!
