i am in my 30's with no medical history to speak of. my left foot suddenly started swelling and hurting even though i have had no trauma. the swelling involves the whole foot and ankle but the pain is only on the inside of my foot starting just behind my big toe and radiating upward to my ankle and around to my inner arch. occasionally my achilles is tendor but not always. There is only discolorization associated with the swelling that worsens as i am up on my foot. Foot aches weather i am up on it or not. i went to the doctor and he took X-Rays(which were negative), bloodwork(which was normal) and a doplar scan(again all negative). i asked what was wrong and he said your foot is swelling and it hurts. does anyone have any input?

Hi,

I know you said there was no trauma involved, but have you been doing anything different to normal? i.e. more walking/running/sports, different shoes. Anything you can think of may help.

Have a look at this page to see if any of these injuries match your symptoms:

My recommendation would be to visit a sports injury specialist (physio/physical therapist etc) who can do a full assessment of your problem. This is the only way of getting a full picture of what is going on, including posture, biomechanics, muscle length and strength etc.

Other than that, ice it regularly and try anti-inflammatories to relieve pain and swelling. Stretch all the surrounding muscles daily too (calf (gastroc and soleus), quads, hamstrings).

i walk 2 miles every night. i walk on a turf track in New Balance Walking Shoes. it started with the metatarsil below my big toe mildly aching, then swelling from the top of my ankle all the way down to my toes and then the sypmtoms i described above. If i did anything else i don't know what it is. I looked at a model of a foot on here somewhere and the area that hurts is labeled the Tibialis Anterior, the Hallucis Longus, and the metatarsil??? does that help any??? my doctor called today and he wants to do an MRI in 2 weeks. will that help?

Yes, thats great news. Hopefully the MRI will show up the problem!

Good luck!
