I injured my lower righ leg 4 years ago falling off a figure skating jump. My foot was forced outwards and upwards. I was treated for a sprained ankle at time but never seemed to completely heal. I have been skating on it for 4 year (with alot of pain) and have spent a fortune on physio bills.

I was refered to an orthopeadic surgeon who after a while decided I had anterior compartment syndrome and I subsequently went through and operation a year and a half ago to release the compartment. The operation was a failure and I am still in pain every day. I was then told to learn to live with it. I asked for a second opinion and have had more xrays (all negative) and MRI (negative) and an ultrasound (negative). I cant understand how I can be in so much pain and nothing show up!

While researching skating injuries on the internet I found a few pages on high ankle sprains and it fit my syptoms perfectly! My physio had never heard of it before but did the squeeze test and cross leg test which were both positive. Could I still be suffering a high ankle strain after 4 years and if so what can be done to help me, if anything.

I am in alot of pain daily and no amount of tablets seems to help. It has also greatly impacted on my sporting activities which frustates me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Yes it is possible that a high ankle sprain could still be causing pain after all this time. If it was not properly treated int he first place then there is more than likely excess scar tissue present as well as muscle weaknesses amongst other problems.

I am also surprised your physio has never heard of this! Go and visit someone who has (its not that rare!) They should be able to treat it and correct the balance of strength and flexibility around your ankle!

Good luck!
