I have a pain in my upper hamstring almost to the point where it is in my buttocks. Its somewhere around the hamstring/glute insertion. I injured it trying to change a tire, and when trying to loosen one of the bolts it was stripped and I picked the tire up off the ground just a little and pulled something.

It was pretty minor, I'm still able to run without much pain, but movements like getting out of the car cause a mild amount of pain. The real problem is that sumo deadlifts cause an extreme amount of pain once I get into heavy weight. Basically, trying to stand up when my knee is far in front of pelvis causes pain in the area.

So far I've been treating it with a foam roller every day, and tons of anti inflams, but its been two weeks now and the pain is still there.

Oddly enough olympic squatting does not cause much pain if any at all, but squatting pushing my hips back with some forward lean and a lower bar position causes a large amount of pain.

Probably as you said, a hamstring insertion tear, maybe even to the tendon.

I would recommend some sports massage (maybe some ultrasound) and a period of complete rest from exercises involving the hamstrings. Regular stretching and then a very gradual return to hamstring strengthening should do it.

I know you said you have been using the foam roller but it doesn't quite get to the point like a massage where you can really get the thumbs in there! Although because you have used the foam roller, this might be the reason why less strenuous hamstring contractions do not cause you a problem.

Good luck!
