My boyfriend hurt his knee in a soccer game yesterday and not sure what he's done. He has a history of knee pain - he had an arthroscopy on his knee last year showing no problems and he had a release done on both knees to try and stop the pain. He has been playing soccer for almost 13 years now - so I thought it could possibly be due to overuse - tendinitis or something like that. But every doctor says that nothing is wrong with his knees.
Yesterday he stuck out his leg to get the ball and clashed in a tackle. His knee was swolled and it hurt to touch the anterior knee around and under the patella. Today it feels like there is something in his knee obstructing movement and when he extends the leg, he feels a sharp pain in the knee. What could this be? He wants to play asap but I think he needs to get it checked out! Someone please help!

Hi

Yeah, he definately needs to get it checked out as it could be a number of things and it is difficult to really help without seeing the knee.

The most likely things are a meniscal (cartilage) tear or some ligament damage.

For now make sure he rests it, applies a compression bandage and ices it regularly. Get him to go to a physio/sports therapist etc

Good luck!
