Hello,

I weight lift, and about 6 weeks ago I done a particular exercise (deadlift), and on the last repetition, I struggled to 'lockout', so as you should, I squeezed my glutes hard and managed to get it.
After the workout, the part in the link below highlighted felt tight. But it did not feel in the leg or abdominals itself. After a few days, it subsided. When I done Squats about a week later, again, the feeling came back.

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2372/muscleanatomyjd3.jpg

I then went on holiday. One morning I got up and walked to the shops, and I got a sharp pain in this area, which then went. The next day I was sitting and caught a nerve, which meant the next day I had to rest as I had pain doing through my right buttock.

I then came back and rested 2 weeks, and after speeking to my sports massage girl, she suggested when I go to squat, I try some core work before to see if there any problems. There wasnt, and I warmed up more than usual. And after a few sets, the discomfort (tightness) came back, and was sore to push the next few days.

I went to see my chiropractor yesterday (as I have one or two back problems, but not related to this), and he was quick to dismiss sciatic nerve for some reason (even though I have exerpienced soreness and throbbing in the area on my groin, and through my right buttock). He checked to see if it was a hernia, and theres no signs, but he thought it could be soft tissue damage (deeper). Stretching my legs didnt cause any problems either.

When I've been sitting for a while, or do exercises like Squats or Deadlifts, which involved bending at the waist, and either pressure or a fair amount of usage of my glutes, the discomfort comes back and I get the same symptons (sometimes throbbing in groin or right glute, and a bit tight sort of 'flexor' feeling).

What makes me wonder of course, is what this could be, and how to overcome it. As I dont want to take months off, and come back and the same thing happen again.

Also, something else I found is that when I foam roller / tennis ball, my glutes and parts of my buttocks, they are tight and uncomfortable to do, espcially my right. Afterwards though, the pain in my groin goes for a few hours (instantly feels better).

When I have exercised again, I've felt strong in these movements. But it seems weird that the glutes and this pain / discomfort in my groin have some sort of link?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance
Lewis

Oseitis Pubis
Pubis Symphysis
Hip Flexor Dysfunction
SI JOINT

This is a miserable place to hurt.

I will be having bi-lateral injections into my pelvis on Tuesday and cannot wait. I've been DISABLED with this horrible condition for 20 months now. No back pain for me has been worse. It has affected every part of my life.

At worse I could not lift even a small, small purse or kick a tiny toy for my dog.

I pray the injections work...........I'm at the end of the rop and the knot has come UNDONE ! :)

See if any of these fit.........very overlooked conditions in the medical field.

BLESSINGS, Shug60

Thank you for replying.

I've had a look into all 4 (google searches, then on to injury / physio sites), and I dont think any of them match. As most of them seem to refer to long lasting and more servere pain.
Where as mine has been on and off due to certain movements or sitting too much, and has not been 'pain', but more tightness, then sore to 'push' (touching the area wasnt sore, but pushing it a bit was) the next day.

Im still looking into things. Looking into going to a physio, to try and find out the exact problem.

I have been able to do Leg exercises and core work, which do not require bending at the waist, and havent had any problems.
Have been doing dynamic stretches working on range of movement, and stretching out glutes and flexors, which has felt a bit better. My right glute still seems to be tighter than my left though.

Thanks for your help, at least I can rule out one or two. Sorry to hear about your problems, I hope things improve for you.

Hi,

I think it probably is all related to problems in the buttocks.

Have a look at this page about piriformis syndrome.

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/buttocks/piriformis.htm

It is commonly overlooked by chiropractors and Dr's as they think all sciatic pain is due to a disc herniation.

Pain can radiate down the back of the leg and cause tight adductors (groin muscles) too.

If it is the case using a foam roller is great. Also stretch the piriformis everyday as well as hams and adductors. Get your massage girl to work into it too.

There are more ideas for strengthening and stretching on the site.

Good luck!

Thank you for replying, greatly appreciated.

Is it possible for this to also slightly affect lower back and knee on my right hand side? My right knee has been aching more recently (usually stops after foam roller work), and last night my right lower back was aching a bit.

Im going to a second chiropractor tonight to have a consultation, as my last seemed to overlook certain things. I will ask him about this.

Will post a reply as I find anything out.

Thanks again

Went to see new chiropractor. He's got more knowledge about the sort of exercises I do. I explained it all to him, and he then checked things out.

It looks like my leg length difference is about 6mm, which is actual leg difference, as my pelvis is symetrical (im one of the 1 in 100,000+ who has this). This is causing a fair amount more stress on my right hand side (knee, hips, back), and then caused the piriformis to tighten, which is causing tightness and radiating the soreness around other area (like groin), its apparently tight, and is tender. This is catching / putting pressure on the sciatica nerve, which is what caused the pains before, and why I have experienced nerve pulses and contractions down the back of my leg (this is the weirdest feeling ever! Also when he was pinching the sciatica nerve in my back).

So im booked up again for next Monday, and he said we'll try and get things back to normal before holiday (so I dont have any problems, and can enjoy it). A few more back manipulations (will probably be regular), and look into a specialised insert for my slightly shorter leg. Once initial bit has gone, will get a few sports massages for the areas.
Although, as mentioned, in some way, its better I picked up on things now (or in more detail), as the problems would have been greater in years to come.

Ice packs tonight and maybe tomorrow, plus neurofen. Giving any exercise rest for a few days. Also keep up core work, mobility exercises, stretching and foam roller. Feel happier now that I know what this is, and that it should be sorted eventually. Still going to cause some discomfort though.

Many thanks to the people who have posted. Thank you Heidi for your help, greatly appricated.

It seems that the problem of this could be from tight hip flexors.

My chiropractor thinks that it could be the psoas. When I have done stretching every day, it helps the situation. I still do stretches 2-3 times a day, dynamic / activation / mobility work 2-3 times a week and foam roller / tennis ball every day.

I get some release from using tennis ball on psoas and the hip flexor stretch where you pull your foot back a little. Its no where near as bad as it was. But I seem to have hit a plateau in my progress.
With the exercises and stretches Im doing, I cant seem to get it to loosen much more or solve the problems.

I tried a few very light exercises yesterday after a few months of no lower body exercises. It did not cause me any problems, but I didnt feel happy about it. I done things like pull-throughs with light weight, and really squeezing glutes (feeling it today...).

Should I try things like OH Lunge Walk and OH Squats to try and stretch the area dynamically?
Any advice?

Edit (note) - My leg length difference is currently about 2-3mm. When I started seeing new chiropractor it was 7mm. Through stretches and back manipulation, it went down. But I think I have always had that difference.
Psoas is just a rough idea, but any other suggestions which fit in may help.

Thanks again

Also forgot to mention that my right lower back seems to be aching again, and has done for last week. Have recently felt a bit of tightness / pain going through glutes and upper hamstrings. But only very slight.
Left leg is shorter than right. Right hand side has ached as mentioned, and is also the side where the deeper hip flexor seems to feel tighter.

Hi,

Looks like you and me both, though you seem to be on the right track now.

I often have minor back complaints which consist of knots and have required manipulation to releive the tightness etc..

I have had the acute pain in the groin area for about 3 & half weeks now which to me feels like a trapped nerve and seems to be connected with the right side of my lumber / lower back. I also find the pain to be worse when I am sitting rather than standing a moving. I am sure it is the same as what you have experienced from the symptoms you have described very well.

I am also experiencing the tightness on my right Hamstring and slight pain on the right knee. Still also getting tightness and knots in the upper sections of my back at the same time and have also received tightness in the right forearm, which could be a mild case of tendonitis....what a mess I am in.

I am also a regular gym/weights user 3-4 times a week and tried resting for atleast one week, but the pain was still very much present in the areas mentioned... much to my misery.

I also have a shorter right leg and v. slight curvature of the spine which tends to be the cause of my back complaints. I try and stretch as much as I can to eleviate any tightness, but this is not always effective.

I am booked in with a Chiropractor/physio next Monday and wan them to get straight to the source as you have diagnosed, only how do I explain what this is more likely to be without telling them?

How is your treatment going by the way and has the pain subsided?

Very frustrated myself and very grateful for any feedback.

Hello,

Sounds similar to mine. I saw chiropractor again today. After manipulation, my legs and pelvis are more equally aligned. But after a week and a bit, it starts to go back. So once again, everything has come to halt in terms of progress. Im looking into what could be causing this, as I believe that the problem with the psoas has almost gone, and is now being caused by something else pulling the pelvis around on the right side.

Not sure what Im going to do next, bit annoyed with it all again. Might find some info on a sports injury therapist with knowledge of things like SI joint problems.

Hope things are improving for yourself.
