I went from 25 min on treadmill (3 degree incline) to 40 min workout. Developed mild pain on outside of right shin (near the bone). Pain tends to go away during workout, but , then comes back later.

The odd symptom--when pressing fingers next to the shin bone(4-5 inches up from the ankle) and pointing toe of foot down and back up--it feels like something is rubbing together and makes a faint squeaking sound, much like a hinge?

Any ideas on cause/diagnosis appreciated.........Jim

Hi,

Its probably just the muscle underneath your fingers moving. I wouldn't worry about it!
Although I would recommend resting, massage and stretching exercises for the shins and calfs. This should help reduce the pain in the muscles outside the shin

I looked up stretches for shin muscles, and began doing them today. Also started some ibuprofen.

I failed to mention that the pain actually began when I switched from the treadmill to just plain walking outside while on vacation. I'm pretty sure that walking outside requires more muscle power than the treadmill.

Yes you are right. Variations in incline mean the muscles must work harder too.
