About 6mths ago I was running and stepped into a hole on my left side (didn't see it). Got injured deep in the left buttock and had some physio etc to get rid of it. Sort of did get rid of it but then slowly got more discomfort towards the coccyx, lower buttock region. It's strange feels like little spots at just where the coccyx starts (either side but sometime on the coccyx). Seen the dr, no fracture. Doctors think I'm a hypo, been to physios and they are stuffed, the first one they said was Sacrotuberous injury, this one not sure. I do recall slipping coming down the stairs one day and landing on my buttocks, but cannot recall if this started off the 2nd bout.

I do a lot of running (have reduced this now to include cycling and swimming). On the whole the feeling is not pain, just discomfort. Worse when sitting, however when standing it can feel like there is something there about where the coccyx is.

Hi

I am not sure what the injury could be, but have some suggestions.

What treatment did the physio give you?

Injuries which start when one hip is dropped (such as yours when your foot went in the hole) are often associated with damage to the hip abductors and rotators, i.e. gluteus medius and piriformis being the main culprits).

Due to the close proximity of the sciatic nerve to the piriformis, injury to this muscle can cause strange sensations and referred pain to other areas in the lower buttock and down the back of the leg.

As I say I don't know if this is the cause of the pain in your case, but it might be worth looking into. You can get some more information here:

My advise would be to get another full assessment with a recommended physio or someone similar who is highly rated. If I am correct, treatment involves massage and stretching exercises, followed by strengthening exercises.

Thanks Heidi

I''m not getting sensations down the leg, just in the base of the spine, coccyx and slightly left and right of this.

Originally the physio did a fair bit of massage and some strengthening (strengthening the buttocks with step ups, lunges etc). Now they are ultrasounding the area, a bit of acupuncture, a fair bit of stretching too. They seem a little perplexed by the injury and not sure if this second part is from the first slip in the hole or not.
