I've been doing so much research and now I've found you guys!!
I'm 32 yr old female, right side dominence. I've always had shoulders that dislocate but it never hurt, more of a party trick ("that's NOTHING watch this"). I'd have pain and discomfort for about 2-3 days and then all would be OK. The older I've gotten the less control I have over it and the more pain it causes, and for LONGER. This time did me in. I was laying in a chair with my arms back behind my head. When I went to lower my arms the "CLUNK" happened and a SNAP of pain. I've been hurtin' ever since. That was 9-9-08!! It's coming out at night when asleep, when I turn the steering wheel, even when I have to bust a kids butt at home. I went to see the ortho surgeon and he said that the ligaments were stretched out and that I would end up needing surgery to correct it. That I could try and go through Physio but that it was 50/50 shot that it would do anything to prevent the sublexations. That because the shoulder was coming out during the night that he wasn't sure that physio would work. I told him that I wanted to try physio anyway!!
So Yesterday was the first visit. During the exam, the guy said that I had a huge exterior rotation and that everytime he would move the hurt shoulder he could feel it popping in and out. They started me out on isokenetics. I'm now having shooting pain down into my fingers, band like pain at the top of my bicep, my neck has a crick in it. I'm just feeling BEATIN today!!
My questions is this, is it realistic to think that physio will help or do I need to face the facts that I will require surgery to keep the shoulder "in"? It's hurting pretty bad right now and ibuprfen/tylenol isn't touching it!!! Has anyone had such loose shoulders that one falls out CONSTANTLY? What procedure was used to treat, how long till you were able to drive, what type of sling/brace were you put in post-op? Can I still function as a mother of 3 during recovery? Or should I plan on someone else watching kids for first week or 2?
Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
Amy in TN
