I am getting pain which initiates from my right shoulder and will spread down the outside of my upper arm - about halfway. This seems to occur mainly during and after a chest workout but never a shoulder workout - and the worse of the pain will occur some time "after" the workout? I work on rotator cuffs, warm up and stretch out the chest and shoulders before / after I train, but can't get rid of this?

Any ideas please?

Hi,

You could possibly be causing some irritation to a nerve when you do your chest workout which is causing the referred pain down your arm - what type of training are you doing, free weights or fixed weights, press ups, etc?

Might be worth getting the opinion of a physiotherapist or sports therapist on this one, just to check and make sure it's not due to your technique etc.

I mostly use free weight (presses / flyes) and body weight exercises (push ups / dips) for a chest workout. I believe the pain is more noticeable when doing incline work! I also believe I will need to seek hands on physio advice on this.
Thanks Ruth.

Hello again,

It might well be that when you're doing the incline work, due to the technique you're using or the positions that you are in, something is getting irritated as I mentioned above. See if you can get to see a physio who works with athletes (if you can get one who works with weightlifters that might be really helpful!) who can look at your lifting technique and see if this is contributing to the problem!

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!
