Question What is the cause of my upper back pain?

Over past 3 weeks I have had a pain around the middle trapezius to rhomboid region. I first noticed when whilst at rugby training, I don't remember any direct movement or impact that may have caused it. After practice I applied some ice to area I got the pain in upper back and the following morning repeated the same procedure to some relief the pain had reduced by the following day. The following weekend I was suppose to be playing in a pre-season game, however, during the warm up when performing some lineout lifts I noticed the same pain reoccur. At that point I decided to pull out of the match to avoid further injury and treated the injury as if it was a tear/strain. I was able to get some sports massage around the area but I found that it initially made me feel slightly more comfortable but made the symptoms worse later the same day. At that point in time I changed from using ice to heat treatment but it seemed to make it worse so switched back to ice. At that point I still believed it was a tear, but 3 weeks later I have noticed some other symptoms like pain when breathing deeply but only sometimes.

Do you think I am still dealing with a sprain/tear or do you think this might be related to something else? At the time I don't remember suddenly thinking it hurt, and I know I hadn't done anything repetitive in that session that may have been a cause. One other thing, I have had some minor discomfort in chest when breathing but not convinced its related.

I am still in pain it appears as if the pain is coming from behind the clavicle and most of the time aches its only when I begin to move around that the pain increases where I get this sharp pain and I find if I get massage on the area the pain goes through the roof!

The common cause of discomfort and the upper part of the back has to do with the soft tissues. Pain can result from over exerting this area or from injury.
