    Default Costochondritis

    Hi,

Just over a month ago I began to experience a sharp pain in my chest. It was just off centre on the right side. When i pushed on the area i could feel it was tender but was most affected when i moved in certain ways. The pain was always like a stabbing pain and was esp bad when the movement involved squeezing my arms together.

I was a fitness instructor for about 12 years but stopped this a few years ago when I had my son. I have exercised since then although not as much as previously. My upper body joints are very mobile.
I do see an osteopath for a sacroilliac problem and when i mentioned this pain she said it was possibly Costochondritis or tietze symdrome because of where and what i was describing. She treated this with the ultrasonic machine but said to go back if it continues.
This was just over a week ago and i went to a step class last week and that evening it flaired up really badly. I couldnt turn over in bed and the next day i couldnt do to much without experiencing the pain. Since then it has subsided but today am feeling the area when i move my right shoulder. It's not pain but like a tight pulling.
Sneezing or coughing makes the area 'pop' and this seems to release any tension thats has built up in the chest area.

I can't really afford to go back to osteo again so soon but am wondering what I should be doing to help this go away. I dont want to give up my 2 classes a week but am worried about it always flairing up. Can anyone help??

    Hi,

Unfortunately this condition can be very difficult to treat. Treatment usually involves mobilisations and physio/osteo treatment. Have you tried taking anti-inflammatories? These would at least ease the pain.

If treatment does not help then corticosteroid injections are the last resort
