Default Foot Pain on outside edge of foot

Hi, in the last week I have developed a sharp pain on the outside edge of my foot, from around the middle part up to my fifth "pinky" toe. I do not feel the pain when I'm running, only afterwards.
The pain mainly occurs if I move my foot in certain ways eg twisting or circling the foot.
It feels like some kind of nerve inflammation pain but I'm not sure.

I checked my symptoms on the net and the closet match I could see would be either some kind inflammation of the sural nerve or the peroneus brevis tendon, but not entirely sure..from what I could see that's the areas where I'm experiencing pain.

Any ideas as to what it could be?. If so, what would be the treatment?

    Many thanks for any advice.

    Regards,
    Will

    Hi
Do you ever feel any other senations in the foot, such as numbness or pins and needles? Does the pain shoot from the back of the foot towards the toes or is it always just is one spot? Can you touch any point thats tender?
Did this just come on gradully or after an incident? Is there pain anywhere else in the lower leg?

Sorry for the questions, but they may help distinguish if there is any neural involvement.

Hi Heidi, thanks for replying to me. I will try and give you as much info as I can and answer your questions.

I don't feel any other sensations in my foot, it is a sharp pain I feel, mainly if I twist my right foot inwards, the main source of the pain being the outside edge up to my pinky toe, especially if I twist my foot inwards. I do not feel any other pain in my foot.

I have had plantar fasciitis in the past, so I know what foot pain can be like unfortunately, but the pain is not on my heel it is further up my midfoot and on the outside edge.

To me the pain really feels nerve related, when I stroke a certain part of my foot - around the middle of the outside edge I can feel the pain which shoots up to my pink toe.

The pain has come on quite sudden, after a long run (10miles) and then a short interval session, however this is normal for me as I am a club runner. I am not doing any major miles, only 20-30 per week, running 3-4 times per week, there has not been any change in my training of late.

As I said in my previous post it sounds like either inflammation of the sural nerve or the peroneus brevis tendon, but I could be wrong. It's just my symptoms and location of the pain seem to be around these areas.

Hope this answers some of your questions, any advice is appreciated.

    Many thanks,
    Will.

    Hi
I can see why you have come to the two possible injuries.
If the pain is actually in the little toe and the joint between the toe and foot, then peroneal tendon injury is unlikely as this attaches to the base of the metatarsal and so stops mid foot. If there is no shooting pain from this region it is unlikely.

If touching the foot in one area causing the pain in the toe then neural conditions should be investigated. Moving your foot so that the sole faces inwards would also strecth this nerve and so may explain pain on this movement.

As the pain does not come on whilst running it is unlikely that it is muscle related, at least not directly. Although muscle tension causing compression on the nerve could be part of the cause.

I can only advise you to visit a professional who either specialises in foot injuries or nerve injuries.
