    Default Side of Foot Pain

6 months ago, I had been running for a few months, working up to 40 mins running 3 times per week, when I developed a pain in my foot.

There is no pain when I run, but an hour or so later, or sometimes the next day, there is pain on the outside of my left foot, along the side. It does not hurt to touch the area. It does not hurt to walk on the foot but when I sit down it starts to throb and this will continue for days, gradually wearing off until I run again and it starts again. It can tend to get a little worse each time I have a run but still it never hurts when I run, only after I have stopped when it starts to throb.

It does not look swollen. If I turn my left foot in a clockwise motion it starts to hurt when I get round to the left side and this is the same when I turn it the other way, it’s fine until I get round to the left side. If I bend it inwards to the right it doesn’t hurt, but turning it out to the left does hurt.

This happened 6 months ago and after a phone call to my local gym injury clinic describing the symptoms I was told to rest it for a month. The one month turned into a few months and I recently started to run again. For a month or two I just did a 15 minute run each time and there was no pain in my foot but I did a 30 minute run/walk last night and the pain is back and I’m worried it is just going to get worse again the more I run.

I am finding it difficult to self diagnose what exactly this problem is and what I can do about it i.e. strengthening the foot, resting it etc? I don’t want to stop running but I also don’t want to cause permanent damage.

I have proper running shoes bought in a reputable store after having gait analysis etc and they checked they fit well etc.

I would be grateful if anyone could give me a name of this problem so that I can do some research and see how I can fix it?

    Hi
I don't think anyone will be able to give you a specific name of what the problem is in your foot. This is mostly because the foot is extremely complex and trying to diagnose it without seeing your foot etc is just not possible.
I would recommend that you visit your sports injury clinic for an assessment. In the meantime, rest to avoid doing further damage.
