    Question Strange footpain

    Hi!

In beginning of February I developed pain in my right forefoot, pain got gradually worse during running until it wasn´t possible to continue. I was diagnosed with a possible stress fracture in the metastarsal bones although I was not examined in detail, just via normal x-rays (showing nothing) and a physical exam of the area.

I rested for about 8 weeks, in the meantime I did some bicycling and went to the gym.
I also got shoes with insoles specially designed for my feet, my forefeet were sunken down and I needed a small cushion to support the forefoot. Also I had been running in shoes for pronators although I need a neutral shoe.

I then started walking and gradually running, starting with a few minutes at a time and gradually increasing the amount. Now I have been able to run 5km but I still feel a little pain. I just don´t know what the pain comes from. The foot feels a little sore, and if I squeeze the foot in the middle (putting my hand all around the foot) its feel as if it is a little bruised. The forefoot feels “tired” and there is a diffuse pain on top of the foot.
I should add that I have been running more or less without pain but the pain has increased during the past week. I also feel a slight pain in the plantar fascia.

The clinic that designed my insoles said that this might be due to me not tightening my shoe laces enough thus making the foot glide in the shoe and so the cushion is not in the right place. With rest my foot is gradually getting better but I am concerned about a point on top of the foot which hurts if I tap the foot. It is a very localized point in the middle of the foot and not where the stress fracture was.

    What can this be?

Any input is very welcome as I am starting to feel a little desperate…

    Hi
I would recommend seeing a physiotherapist or sports therapist. There may be contributing factors from higher up in the leg, it may not all be about the foot.
Tight calf muscles are a big contributor to foot pain for example.
The pain on top of your foot could be a number of things and it is difficult to give you any accurate idea without assessing it as the foot is so complex.
Sorry to not be more help.

    Default Top of foot

    Hi Heidi,

Thank you for your reply, I will try to get an appointment, there is however quite a queue . A bit curious if you have any examples as to what the thing on top of my foot could be? It is just a spot that when I knock on it it hurts.

    Default hi

hi im studying sports therapy and read your post. i dont know if you have had your foot seen to since but i can give a few examples of what it could be. it is very difficult without doing a physical assesment and gathering all the facts. examples are: another stress fracture, tendonitis of the extensor digitourm longus muscle or tibialis anterior, pain could be due to your running gate due to wrong postioning of the foot and causing machanical problems. have you had any knocks or felt anything at the time you discovered the problem anything you feel that did nt feel right at the time. yoou mentioneed the sole of your foot being sore, is i swollen or inflamed this could be the start of plantar faciaitis. hope i have been of any help and hope you get the problem sorted soon.
