Default Ankle help -- 1 1/2 years after sever sprain. help?

    Hello all!

New poster here, but I think I'll stick around since I'm quite active.

January 2008 I had a very bad, high ankle sprain, playing basketball. I immediately stopped playing and applied ice. Once home I wrapped and iced more, applied a heat pad, elevated and stayed off of it for almost 4 days. A few weeks later I started a new job where I traveled and was on my feet the majority of the day, and my ankle would get very fatigued. I'd use a basic brace which helped a little but not much. The pain wasn't always there, but it was always tight in the morning and i wouldn't be able to put much weight on it.

6 months in, I'd play soccer well, but would wear a heavier brace and some games if i kicked the ball wrong it would aggrivate again.

Fast forward to now...I can run long distances again with a heavy brace (lace up and multiple velcro brace points) however it'll be a little sore/stiff a few hours after and if I'm running on mixed terrain (ie: grass) it'll feel kind of awkward. I play soccer a lot still and can generally play all out...but once again with soreness after.

In the morning, every morning, my ankle is VERY stiff. I limp when I walk down stairs, if I slip or take an unexpected step it can aggravate it.

I'm not insured (god bless america...), so I couldn't go to the doc right when this happened. Has anyone got any idea what's wrong with it...a year and a half of this is ridiculous, obviously there's something wrong in the healing process. I was indestructable before this. I just want to be able to run and play soccer like before without having to limp.

    help?

    Hi

Its difficult to say, but if you had no assessment/treatment, there may have been other damage associated with the ligament injury.

The most common cause of persistent stiffness following ankle injury is tightness in the calf muscles. Make sure you are stretching both muscles 3-5 times a day. Sports massage can also help with this.
Strengthening the ankle using calf raises and wobble boards can also be beneficial.

You can find some stretches to help here:
