    Default Calf lock up

    Hi,

I was playing football yesterday and have done some damage to my left calf. I went in for a 50/50 challenge, got straight back up and dived in for another one. Next thing I know, my left leg was dead straight along the floor and the calf muscle was fully locked up - and seemed to be sticking out considerably further than it should be. I couldn't move my leg at all at this point. After about a minute, the muscle relaxed. My calf still feels very tight and is still causing me considerable pain when walking.

Any suggestions as to what I've done / what I need to do?

    Thanks.

    Hi

Either cramp or a muscle strain. Treat it as a muscle strain. You can find info on treatment here:

    http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/backlowerleg/calfstrain.htm

Basically, its rest, ice, compress for the first couple of days, followed by gentle stretching, increasing intensity and hold gradually. All should be pain free although it may not be comfortable.

Massage is always recommended after a muscle injury too.
