    Default Fibula fracture help...

    Hi there,
    My name's Simon.
I was involved in a motorbike accident in the Dominican Republic.
I fractured my hip, my femur in 2 places, and my tibia and fibula.
The doc here (private clinic) put 2 screws in my hip, a pin in my femur, a pin in my tibia, but didn't do anything to my fibula.
I have attached the xray of the fibula, which, to my laypersons eye, looks horrific.
The doc said to me that this is not an important bone, and that unless the fracture gives access to the fibula at time of operation, they usually leave this bone alone.
What bothers me, and everyone else that has looked at this xray is how bad it looks, just being left like this!
I need a 2nd opinion, as i don't trust the quality of the medical services here.
Is it possible to go through life without having an operation on this bone? Will i ever have perfect motion again.
Or do i need to go back under the knife?
I have attached 2 other xrays to show the rest of the work done.
I have already spent 6 weeks with my lower leg, below my knee, in a cast. I am due to get it changed for a lighter one on monday.
Then they will take another xray and i can see if the bones are healing.
So, does my fibula require an op, or will it be ok to leave it like it is?
    Thanx a lot
    Simon

The Doctor is right that the Fibula is not as important as the Tibia as it is not a weight bearing bone.
HOwever I do agree that you should get a second opinion.

I am no expert but would have to agree with Heidi here,

A second opinion would be a good thing to get, i would have thought that leaving a bone broken would have been a bad thing as they can start healing whilst not being set correctly which could then mean for them to have to re-break it just to set it correctly at a later date which could cause more problems and time out for you. Which in any case i personally would not want to even start thinking about let alone wish it on someone else.

I hope your second opinion is of better success and you get things sorted out.
