    Thumbs down Lateral Ankle Injury

    Hi all,

This is my first post so please be gentle with me...

I suffered a (what I thought) minor injury to my lateral ankle (around the talofibula area) while attempting my black belt in karate.

During the sparring section I did a front kick on one of the other students and as I put my foot down again (lightly), I felt a very sharp pain around the aforementioned area...

There was some almost immediate swelling, but not enough to suspect a fracture. I placed an ice pack on the area before continuing with my grading for circa 20 minutes. Since then I have been suffering from severe pain after light and heavy training.

I'm presuming this is just a sprain but would like some confirmation.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Injuries which occur in the way you describe and with your symptoms are usually ankle sprains. However, if it has not improved in the last 6 weeks, you should go and get it checked out, just in case there is a minor fracture or other soft tissue injury such as tendon damage.
Even if there isn't, professional treatment from a physio/physical therapist would be really beneficial.

    Hello again!

I wasn't expecting to be back this soon...

I received treatment for the above at my local sports injury clinic who advised that it was a strain of the tendons as Heidi diagnosed

Unfortunately, while walking to the canteen yesterday (for a healthy breakfast ) my ankle "gave way" for want of a better word, I'm not sure how best to describe the pain only to say that it left me immobile for a few minutes with pain centering around the right ankle joint, up my shin and also my lower calf. This was accmonpanied by some very "worrying" noises: Pop, Crack and a Grind.

I am now managing to walk on it but with a slight limp and a lack of anti inflammatories as I don't want to inadvertantly damage my ankle further by the common misconception of I can't feel any pain so it must be fine lol.

So, anybody care to guess what I have done before I get my diagnosis again :/

    Thanks in advance.

Its hard to guess what it could be. Possibly further ligament damage, but at this stage, what it is doesn't matter too much.
You should just be concentrating on resting it, icing and keeping it mobile doing ankle circles etc (if pain-free). Wait til you see your physio again before you do anything else.
