    Question Sprained Ankle

    Hi,

Each winter/spring for the last 3 years when running I have gone over on my ankle spraining it. In January, I had my worst sprain yet. Crutches for 2 weeks. Then osteopath for two weeks then physio for 6 weeks.

I also had a special insert made for my running shoes to help correct my position. AS well as this I bought a wobble board to help strengthen the ankle.

Now I can run, cycle and swim normally(oh by the way I am a triathlete) with no hinderance from the ankle. I just need to take care when the surface is not even. This being said it is not 100%. By that I mean from time to time I feel a sensation in the ankle i.e. I am aware of the ankle. It is hard to describe. It is not a problem per say but it is not normal either. Usually this sensation occurs after training but not during.

Have you any advice to help prevent recurrence?

    Hi,

You seem to be pretty clued up with regards to the balance and proprioception but what are you actually doing with the wobble board?

You really need to challenge your balance and proprioception after such an injury to get back to sporting fitness, and simply wobbling about with both feet on the board really won't do much for someone expecting the performance I assume you do from your joints!

Speak to a physio who can advise you on progressions of the exercises and show you others which can help challenge your balance even further!

Good luck and please don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like further information.
