Total Inactivity?
Hi--
I have been a competitive swimmer since high school (now 42). A friend talked me into training with a marathon group this year for a marathon in January. After Saturday nine mile run in September, I swam and did a kicking set with my hard fins on Sunday. I didn't experience any pain until that night. The top of my foot and where my anterior tibial tendon attaches to my foot was painful when I walked on it.
I went to the podiatrist and was diagnosed with anterior tibial/extensor tendonitis. He thought it was due to the fins. He told me to keep running but no swimming for a week.
I kept running for the next month. Never had pain while running. Only after resting and first thing in the morning. I was doing some weekly PT with the DC who's affiliated with the running club. At one point I did have pain on the medial part of my ankle where the posterior tibial tendon runs while I was running. Now I think I have both kinds of tendoinitis.
I've tried stopping running, swimming, biking and the elliptical machine. I also wear a night splint that seems to make the inner arch pain much better upon waking. My problem now is, it seems like all activities aggravate the tendons. Even swimming and water running. Is that possible? I have a hard time believing that I can't do anything at all on it. Currently, it seems like the anterior tibial tendonitis has gotten worse. Now it actually hurts during the day if I do something seemingly as benign as the recumbent bike. Any thoughts???
