Default Inner Left Knee discomfort/lack of full mobility?

A few weeks back, I had cause to kneel with my legs underneath me, sitting effectively on my heels for some 10 > 15 mins. When I went to get up, it was very uncomfortable, and my left knee felt 'strained', and would'nt fully flex? I rested said knee, applied the sports injury principle R.I.C.E, and the discomfort started to go, with full mobility returning after a couple of weeks. Two days ago, without thinking, I sat in a similar position for 5 mins, and the discomfort and lack of full flex in that joint returned - but worse! I again applied the sports injury principle R.I.C.E, and whilst awaiting improvement was wondering if I may have some 'Lateral Collateral Ligament' damage? My left knee has 'clicked' for some years, whenever I've knelt down, and then got up, and it's felt as though the stability of the joint is not quite as it should have been? I ran Marathons and Half Marathons in the 1980's & 90's, and still attend a gym 3 x times a week, so I have put my body, knees especially, through some demands over the years. Any ideas about my current symptoms, I would be interested to hear?

Out of interest, why do you think Lateral ligament? Is the pain on the outer side of the knee?

No, inner side - I researched on-line, and thought that research suggested inner knee problems were lateral?

Nope, inner knee problems are medial. So could be the medial ligament although this isn't a usual way of injuring a knee ligament. More likely some cartilage damage or synovial plica.
