    Unhappy Knee pain.

Yet another injury to add to my list for this season

Roughly three weeks ago I was playing Gaelic football and got tripped up and fell on my knees. I didn't feel any initial pain and got up and played on. I then took a shot and felt sharp pain on back of my leg running down to my knee which i just assumed was a hamstring strain and came off as was too sore to continue.

So for the week after I still had pain in the back of my knee and continued to feel it when; sitting with my legs tucked under me, pulling my leg in under a stool to rest on foot bar, going up stairs, slight pain when standing and knee is locked, putting pressure on my heel (at which point i get a slight pain in front of my knee also). I seen the physio at my club who advised me to take some time out before my final. So i did, i took two weeks out to rest and ice my leg etc. Just before my final I seen the physio again to tell him that the pain was still there..... and well now three weeks later the pain is just as it was.

It doesn't hurt to walk on but I tend to notice it when doing such activities as described above.
I have an appointment booked with doctor now having seen the physio a few times. But once i see the doctor it will probably be a good few weeks before i get any kind of xray or anything done.
Physio said could be cartilage or ligament damage.

Just wondering has anyone had same problem or be able to clarify what type of injury it may be?

    Hi
Has the physio assessed it properly?
It's difficult to give you any advice because the symptoms you have listed could be numerous things, from ahamstring strain or a cartilage injury.
Has the physio given you any treatment other than say rest and ice it? If it's hamstring then some massage would really help.

The physio basically asked what my symptoms where and he did massage my hamstring as that was quite tight as well. To be honest the massage on my hamstring didn't really help the pain much in my knee as I could feel it niggling again after the session. I went back to training for a week before my final just out of sheer determination to get playing. I strapped it up well but could feel little pain on back of my knee when fully extending my leg to kick the ball out of my hands.

Physio advised me to see the doctor but I knew they would just say to take time out, and at the time this wasn't an option otherwise i would have missed the final.

If I'm seated with my leg in a slight bend and i put pressure on my heel with toe pointed upwards and push back slightly on my heel, i get the pain at the back of my knee and towards bottom of my hamstring and also a pain that feels like its behind the patella tendon.

Doctors aren't too clued up on sports injuries so they'll probably prescribe some anti inflammatories and send me on my way.

So i went to the doctor last week and he prescribed me some Naprosyn tablets for pain and inflammation. They don't seem to be working though. He told me that it would not be cartilage and it is more likely to be a hamstring strain. The pain is still there but worsens if i kneel and sit back on my heels, also if i'm sitting with my legs crossed like Buddha position. Its really painful on the back of my thigh, knee and front of the knee when sitting with my knee slightly bent and my toe pointed upwards with pressure pushing backwards on my heel.
I have to go back to doctors next week if the pain is still there after taking a further two weeks out from sport and physical activity.

If it is a hamstring strain why would it hurt in the front of my knee at times also, and how long roughly will it take to heal properly.

    Hi again!
    I don't think it's a hamstring injury really.
The symptoms you describe at the front of the knee aren't consistant with a hamstring strain and usually it would have healed before now.
I think you need to go to another physio for a second opinion.
