knee and shin pain

Hi

My partner was playing football last week, when he came home he had a severe pain from his knee down his shin and in to his ankle. He is now having trouble driving and walking for a while. He has not been able to play football this week as the pain is too much and often finds himself limping.

He also has fluid around his knee.

Please help.

Did he get tackled, fall over, land awkwardly? Anything like that? Or did it just come on, whilst he was playing, or after?

This is important as it will help determine whether it is an acute injury or more an overuse, inflammation injury.

On which side of the knee is the pain and swelling and does it shoot down the inside, outside or front of the shin?

Sorry for all the questions! but it helps give me a good idea of whats going on
