Kneecap Pain
Problem:
I have been having problems with my right knee and kneecap. The problems started after I pulled my right hip flexor while doing sprints. I went to the athletic trainer to get electro stim therapy for my hip flexor and instead they applied it to my sartorius muscle. When I started running again, my leg was being pulled upwards by mostly my sartorius muscle (hip flexor was not engaged). This caused my right leg to rotate laterally about 45 degrees with each stride. As a result my vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, gluteus minimus, and outer hip muscles and tendons visibly decreased by about 50% and accordingly their strength diminished by well over 75% or previous capability. I made the mistake of running about 40 miles per week for about six months like this.
My right knee cap is pulled medially on my knee (this is painful) and whenever I exercise my quads (cycling, running, squats) the kneecap is pulled even farther medially and this causes serious pain. In addition my hip flexor only is active for about the first 3 minutes of running. Any longer and it completely shuts down and the sartorius takes over.
Attempted Remedies:
Between several physical trainers and physicians of varying areas of expertise I have using the following for a year and a half roughly without any luck.
• narrow stance: squats/leg press
• outer hip strengthening exercises with stretch bands and light weights (clamshells, lateral leg raises, hip hikes, ect)
• calf raises
• leg curls
• electro stimulation of the hip and vastus lateralis
I feel frustrated because I cannot find any information on the internet about a similar problem and its remedy. Any advice is appreciated.
