    Default outside of knee tender

I have what feels like a bruise on the outside of my left knee, to find the exact position the best way to explain it is if you move your fingers up the outside of your left calf until you reach the second bone - it's there.
I have very few problems with pain during my chosen activity (hill walking) but if i happen to twist my knee on uneven ground then pain will occur.

    Any ideas?
any suggestions would be gratefully received

    Hi there,

I'm not sure about where exactly the pain is. But if you look on this page:

    http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/knee_injuries.htm#lateral

you can find information about lateral knee pain and look through the associated injuries to see if any of them relate to you. The most likely are lateral ligament sprain and Ilio-tibial band pain.

Any more information such as when it first started, any incident which might have caused it etc may help

    Good luck

Thanks for your suggestions which i have read - thanks you. To try and be more specific the pain area (which sometimes feels more like a throbing) is just above the knob of the fibula on the outside of my left knee that seems to be swollen. After applying RICE this reduces and having a support helps too.
I am now convinced i have a lateral cartilage strain, if this is the case what else can i do to aid recovery?

If this is the case then you need to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee joint to help stabilise the knee. Exercises such as squats and lunges are excellent for this.

You can find out more about these exercises and how to perform them here: http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/strengthening/free_weights.php
