Question Pain only when or after running

About a year ago I trained very hard for a possible try at Special Forces. This included 4-8 mile runs, road marches with 70+lbs rucksack, and then the regular pushups, sit-ups, etc... When the S.F. deal didn't pan out, I went for the GAFET. A German Army physical fitness test that involves running, swimming, track & field events, shooting, and a very long road march. I finished that with no problems but about a month later while doing a 2 mile run on a standard 1/4 mile track my right knee popped and hurt like heck. I was stupid and just let it be thinking that rest would fix it.
The pain from that day went away within a couple days and would only return if I ran/jogged. A year later it is the same. I can walk all day and feel virtually no pain but within a half mile of starting a run, I feel extreme pain on the outside of my knee. I haven't noticed any swelling or heat (but I haven't specifically looked for it). Wearing a brace does not seem to help any nor does taking ibuprofen.
My knee often pops now when doing normal bending/twisting but I do not experience any pain from it.
I just completed a 2.5 mile speed walk (28min) and did not have any pain, just a slight feel of that knee that I did not have in my other knee. The day before this walk I attempted a 2 mile run and was only able to make it .5 miles before the pain caused me to quit.
I really need help on this one, my military career depends on it. Thank you for any advise you can give.

I think with so much depending on this it would be wise to visit a sports injury professional. There are a few things it could be, including cartilage damage:

Could also be iliotibial band or patella pain syndrome. But it is virtually impossible to tell between these from the symptoms you have described without seeing you for an assessment.

Sorry to not be more helpful!

    Thanks for the reply Heidi.
I have already scheduled a visit to a doctor. I've just never had any experience with any of the doctors around here and wanted to have a bit of knowledge on the issue before going in.
I will let you know how things go. Thanks again.
