Red face Posterior Lateral Right Knee Pain (intermittant)

I was out goofing off on the beach, and to make a long story short I hyperextended my knee about 2 months ago. I was jumping on an intertube to bounce someone into the water.... my butt landed on the tube, my foot landed on the uphill side of the beach and my knee (underside of it) hit the sand (while my butt was still like 6 inches off the ground... I know it's a long story... sorry) I didn't hear a pop or anything but I was on a noisy beach... It didn't hurt much when I did it but it just keeps hurting more and more every day and keeps getting stiffer. Anyhow, this has been almost 2 months ago and the pain is just getting worse. I have pain along the back side of the knee that kinda goes from the middle to the right side. It only hurts if I fully extend, or fully bend the knee, and if I am kneeling on it, or crawling around. The knee feels fine if it's in a neutral position and it doesn't hurt if i am carefull when walking. It looks to me that it bends backward more than the other one. (hurts really bad, but the other one woln't go farther than straight, this one would fold completely up I think if I tried hard enough) Anyhow, I have an appointment with an ortho next week, anyone have any thoughts of what I could of done?

    Default Knee Pain

    hi

Difficult to be sure on this description...you need to have a careful examination to assess menisci and cruciate ligaments in particular.
After 2 months and still painful I would definitely go for an MRI scan as the next step...before an arthroscopy...you may have had it by now?

    Hi,

Ben is right, it is possible that you have damaged cartilage or cruciates.

If this comes back clear, the only other thing I could suggest is popliteus injury. This is a small muscle which runs across the back of the knee joint and is usually injured in hyperextension injuries.

We don't currently have any info on the site about it, but this is the muscle:

Wait til your appointment and see what MRI's etc show up with. If they are clear, this is a possibility which is often overlooked.

    Good luck!
