    Cool Running injury

    Hi all,

I run long distance, mostly marathons. I picked up an injury recently thats a bit unusual and kinda hard to explain, but here goes!

I ran a marathon about six weeks ago and had the usual stiffness that comes with it for the following two to three weeks. However, I had a sharp pain across my right quad that I could not shake. I also felt an uncomfort in my knee (no pain) when I began retraining at a high level again two weeks ago but did not link the two.

With me so far! Last week, I went on a six mile run at a quick enough pace. After about three miles this uncomfort in the knee became progressively worse. It starts with a feeling of trapped fluid and then a further feeling of pins and needles (like the leg is going dead). The further I ran the worse it got and by the time I reached just over five miles, I could feel this sensation from my quad (where it hurt first day) right down to my toes. I eventually had to stop because my right leg literally felt like jelly and could not support itself.

The next day I got physio (which mostly focused on the quad) and she advised doing the same run the following day. I did this and had no problems, infact I felt great but beside that day Its been giving me the same problem. Theres no pain as such at the moment and I am able to complete my runs if I dont push the pace but even at the slower pace, I still feel the uncomfort in the knee.

I know thats alot to chew on but it would be great if anybody had any idea's what it could be or what my next step should be.

    Cheers, Shane

    Hi
    I would get it re-checked.
Because the injury didn't occur after a certain event and just came on slowly I think it is unlikely to be a specific muscular injury. Also, The fact that the pain started in one place and has moved into the knee and you have had symptoms of tingling and weakness indicates a neural problem.
This usually starts off higher than the initial point of symptoms. My guess is that it is coming from your buttocks of your lower back area.
Personally I would get it checked out by someone who specialises in running injuries.

    Hi Heidi,

Thanks for that, I think ill give it a rest for a few days and if theres no signs of improvement, I'll try find a physio that specializes in running injuries.

Hopefully its nothing too serious, I'm very anxious to begin hard training again.

    Thanks again, Shane
