Default Slight knee pain concerned might worsen if not untreated

Im a 29 year old male and I got my knee twisted swimming competitvely hitting the back wall of the swimming pooling while trying to give myself a push.

I felt slight discomfort in my knee, but no real pain, then I went play squash the following week, I must say my movement was very laboured and I avoided making any stress on my knees. However the following day I was feeling a slight pain especially when going up the stairs, and my kneed makes a very noticeable pop sound when I straighten it from seated position.

I rested for three months, and went to the gym to strengthen legs muscles, squats, lunges, even jogg on tread mills with no issues at all, however yesterday I went back to playing squash no complains whatsoever while playing, however a couple of hours later I get this little pain and it's only when going up or down the stairs, or doing a bit of jogging. Pain in the knee and towards the back of it.

I am wondering what could be the problem, it seems to be a very early stage of something not right, my concern of not getting correct treatment could get things alot worse and would take much longer time to recover. Is there any required medication of exercises that I should or shouldnt do ?

You are absolutely right that not treating it early can lead to more problems.
It's difficult however to say what may be happening as your symptoms are quite vague. The best advice I can give you is the rest from sport, stretch your quads and hamstrings regularly and get yourself to a sports physio or therapist who can do an assessment to try to determine the cause of your pain.
