    Default Stopped in my tracks

hello: I'm new to this website but it is a mark of my desperation that I'm giving it a try. I am ancient - age 58 but have been running for eons with rarely an injury. I started having Achilles tendon problems in Aug 2010 and really reduced my running, stopped altogether for 9 weeks, had physio etc etc, but it became quite chronic. On my doctor's recommendation I went to a podiatrist who specializes in runners and he adapted my Superfeet orthotic because he felt the front of my foot was collapsing. Long story short, my achilles seemed to improve but within a week (and I started off slowly, lots of stretching, walking/running combos) I became crippled with pain behind my left knee. I was unable to fully bend my knee, it was swollen and I had to stop running again. When I went back to the podiatrist - he swore that the orthotic was perfect - I was fully aligned and told me to buy new shoes, which I did the same day. Tried running/walking for a few short blocks and had to stop. Now two weeks later, it is still sore when I initiate walking, but eases after a few steps, running is out of the question. The pain is primarily behind the knee, but also a bit at the top of the calf on the inside of my knee. At times it throbs at night, I've tried removing the orthotic and doing hamstring and quad stretches - but everything seems to aggravate it. I'm taking anti-inflammatories but my stomach is not too happy with that. To make matters worse, I'm supposed to go skiing in two weeks time for a week and I'm signed up to run the 2 Oceans 1/2 marathon in Cape Town in end of April. At this rate I'm not sure I can do either. I'm miserable. I have an appt to get an ultrasound in a few days, but the time is ticking. I hate to accept old age and give up!. Any suggestions welcome.

    Hi
Have you tried a physical therapist/physiotherapist? If not I would advise this as they should be able to determine the cause of your knee pain.
When you say ultrasound do you mean diagnostic ultrasound or therapeutic?
If all else fails, try a few days without the orthotics and see if that helps the knee?
