Default Strange knee injury, bit worried

    Hi All,

    New here!

I am 23 and play football every weekend, for the last 8 weeks I have been having severe knee pain just below the knee cap on my right knee. After playing or running a lump will appear just below my knee cap (above my lower leg) and the knee will become very stiff and not function well for a couple of days.

I have followed R.I.C.E advice and visited my hospital last week who said it was probably nothing to worry about and to rest up for 6 weeks. I now struggle to walk up (and down) stairs and cannot run at all due to the shooting pain in my knee. I have arranged to visit my GP tomorrow as after standing for two and a bit hours yesterday my knee was in constant pain driving home yesterday.

Just wondered what people thought it may be and what to expect at the Doc's??

    Thanks,

    Lee

    Hi

This could be a case of bursitis. A bursa is a small sac of fluid which has the job of lubricating movement between tendons or muscle and the underlying bone.

There are a couple of bursas which are positioned below the knee cap, the infrapatella bursa and the prepatella bursa. Bursitis is inflamation of the bursa which causes it to swell and become painful.

Infrapatella bursitis is sometimes also found in association with patella tendonitis (jumpers knee).

You can find out more about these conditions on our knee injury page:

In that case I think you need to visit a specialist in sports injuries. I know this can be a costly option, but if it is affecting your life so severely it must be worth it?
